Las Primeras

Las Primeras is a fundraising auxiliary that supports the philanthropic projects of Assistance League of San Pedro-South Bay. It is recognized and well received by the community it serves. Its members reflect a group of dedicated women who set aside time from their families, their work and other obligations to meet the needs of the auxiliary and the community. Since 1964, Las Primeras has made generous contributions to the various philanthropic projects of Assistance League of San Pedro-South Bay.

Los Ojos Bonitos

Los Ojos Bonitos is our newly sanctioned philanthropic project adopted and approved by National Assistance League in 2003. The goal of this project is to provide vision care (in the way of eye exams and glasses) to children who are recommended by the nurses who work in schools within the communities served by Assistance League of San Pedro-South Bay. This project is funded by the proceeds from the Las Primeras fundraisers.

The New Member Fundraiser allows new members an opportunity to plan and host a fundraiser. This is always a fun night for the entire auxiliary and especially for the new members who work very hard to create a financially successful and enjoyable evening. This year this event will be a Holiday Party on December 7th at the Comedy and Magic Club.

The Main Fundraiser, usually held the first Saturday in March, is our major fundraising event. There have been many different types of fundraisers, each of which have been very successful. Las Primeras is proud to have many experienced, talented and professional women in its auxiliary who are always looking for the perfect fundraiser. For example, in 2001-2002, Las Primeras initiated the concept of a combined, all-auxiliary fundraiser to replace its individual fundraising event. By holding an all chapter gala, it was felt that there would be a greater opportunity for overall publicity and financial success for the philanthropic projects. This concept was embraced by the chapter and the first, second, and third annual Affair of the Heart Galas were held in 2002, 2003, and 2004 respectively. The evenings were marked by another important milestone: the inception of the ANNE BANNING AWARD, which was presented to community members whose contribution to the community was noteworthy of such an award. In 2006 members were instrumental in planning the chapter's 70th Anniversary Celebration at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach. This year planning is underway for conducting a Casino Night at the Chapter House on Saturday, March 3, 2007.

The Quilt Exhibit at the chapter house is presented as a public awareness venue that allows attendees an opportunity to learn about Assistance League and tour the philanthropic areas and meeting rooms of the chapter house while viewing the new and heirloom quilts. This year the Quilt Exhibit is planned for Saturday, April 28, 2007.

Social Activities

A social hour precedes the monthly meetings and allows members to mingle and get to know each other. In December, a "Holiday Meeting" is planned which usually takes place at a location other than the chapter house. In April, the Installation of New Officers and New Members is held at a local restaurant and in May the new governing body begins its year hosting a membership dinner (usually with a Cinco de Mayo theme).
